San Bernardino Eye Exams

No matter what your age or how clear you vision may be, adults and children alike need to be having their eyes examined at least once a year. For those of us who do live with a vision problem, these examinations work to insure that the prescription you need to see clearly is always up to date. In the past, it was thought that vision problems stopped getting worse when our eyes stopped growing. However, the same technology we rely on for work and school can also cause harm to our eyes, causing prescriptions to change year after year. These exams also include state of the art testing for optical diseases which can exist for years without showing symptoms, and can occur to anyone regardless of how perfect your vision may appear to be. Fortunately, you can always find the care you need with both eye exams for both eyeglasses and contact lenses with your trusted optometrist in San Bernardino.

The eyes are an extremely delicate organ and if anything is stuck in your eye for more than a couple of hours, don’t attempt to remove it yourself. Instead of attempting to get rid of the foreign body yourself, which can cause more harm than good, you should contact our San Bernardino eye doctor. A foreign body is something like an eyelash, sawdust, dirt, or sand that gets into your eyes. The main symptom is irritation, discomfort, or pain. Depending on what it is and how the injury happened, the foreign body could pierce the eye and cause serious injury. It also may simply go away on its own with no long-term problem but better to be safe than sorry. The foreign object may cause inflammation, and other issues within the eye, resulting in infection if not removed.

Foreign Body Removal San Bernardino

Foreign Body Removal San Bernardino

If there is a foreign body in your eye, such as a piece of grit, our San Bernardino eye doctor may try and remove it. If the foreign body is easy to get to, it may be possible to remove it by simply rinsing your eye with water, or by wiping it away with a cotton pad. If this is unsuccessful, however, our eye doctor may try and remove it by lifting it out with the tip of a small metal instrument. If the foreign body is stuck underneath your upper eyelid, if you can feel something there, or you have scratches or abrasions on your cornea, it may be necessary for us to gently turn your eyelid inside out in order to remove it. Anesthetic eye drops can be used but once they wear off your eye may feel a bit uncomfortable until your abrasion heals.

Basically, a corneal abrasion is a cut or scratch on your cornea, the clear layer of protective tissue at the front of your eye. A corneal abrasion can occur when something gets into your eye, such as dust, grit, dirt, or wood or metal shavings. At Eyecare Associates of San Bernardino we have treated many patients with eye abrasions caused by a fingernail, a tree branch, or a contact lens that is dry or dirty. Rubbing your eyes very hard is another way that an abrasion can occur. Our San Bernardino eye doctor will examine your eye for any damage or particles that may be trapped under your eyelid and treat any abrasion with eye drops or ointment. Most small abrasions heal within one to three days.
