At EyeCare Associates of San Bernadino, our Rialto eye care specialists are dedicated to providing high quality eye care to patients of all ages. Our pediatric eye care caters to a number of eye conditions that are common in children. We would like our patients to be informed about these conditions so that they can recognize symptoms in their own children, and bring them in to EyeCare Associates of San Bernadino for treatment as soon as a condition is noticed.
One of the most typical eye problems that we see in children is amblyopia, or lazy eye. Amblyopia in general refers to a visual impairment in one eye that can result from a refractive error, a pediatric cataract, or misalignment of the eyes. There are many different symptoms that indicate that your child might have amblyopia, such as frequent squinting in one eye, double vision, bumping into objects, or visually seeing a difference in the alignment of your child’s eyes. If you notice any of these symptoms, it is important that you bring your child in for testing right away, because the sooner amblyopia is detected, the better chance your child has at making a full recovery using treatments such as wearing glasses, using eye drops, or sometimes surgery.
Another condition that is common in children is strabismus, which is commonly referred to as crossed eyes. Strabismus in general refers to eyes that are not aligned with each other properly. Strabismus can be present at birth, or it may develop over time. Symptoms that are common to strabismus include squinting, constant tilting of the head, double vision, or the appearance of the eyes being crossed or misaligned. If you notice any of these symptoms in your child, an eye examination from our Rialto eye care experts can confirm a diagnosis and begin treatment.
